  • Reduced Noise Pollution: Electric cars run almost silent. There is no engine and so there are no pistons being pumped or fuel being burnt. This can help in noise pollution in crowded cities which can a positive impact on the mental health of the public. 

Most states are moving toward renewable and sustainable sources of energy for the production of their electricity and this helps on the long run as charging an electric car in these states will be completely Eco-friendly rather than those that depend on fossil fuel for generation of their electricity.

  • Electric cars can also be a source of emissions depending on the source of their electricity. For example, if the source of electricity for an electric is from a coal power plant. The emissions during the production of electricity fall on the back of electric cars.
  • Electric cars are also not always clean and this I have explained above. It doesn’t make sense to buy an electric car in a region where electricity is exclusively produced from nonrenewable sources. In this such regions, gasoline cars are better alternatives because of the high emissions during the production of electric cars. 

All this may seem like that electric cars are no better than gasoline cars but that’s not true. The significant damage caused by electric cars is primarily during the initial phase of their lives and this can be changed by adopting cleaner energy sources for both the manufacturing and maintenance of electric cars.

Policies, incentives and regulation have been introduced by the government in the hopes of speeding up the electric vehicle adoption process. Both the state and the federal government have different policies to help this change: 


Owners can avail tax credits of $2500-$7,500 for electric vehicles depending on the battery capacity. This was established by The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Converting conventional gasoline-powered vehicles to electric vehicles by retrofitting kits can provide you with up to $4000 for one vehicle. 

New Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) encourages the adoption of electric drive technologies. Cars and light trucks from 2012 onward need to have 16% greater fuel economy than 25.5 mpg of the previous year under stricter CAFE standards. CAFE also requires 33% greater fuel economy for vehicles from 2016 over 2011 vehicles. This increases pressure on automobile manufacturers to move to Hybrid and electric vehicle technologies sooner. 


At least 47 US states including the District of Columbia have set up regulations to promote electric vehicle usage. And 40 of these 47 states provide tax benefits/rebates for purchases if Hybrid/Electric Vehicles. The district of Columbia along with 13 other states are adopting clear air standards similar to the likes of California. This would need automobile manufactures to reduce greenhouse vehicles by 30%. This would help innovation and adoption of electric vehicles. 

As of now, these regulations and policies are an urge to make manufacturers and consumers move to electric vehicles as soon as possible. These restrictions make manufacturers sell at least some zero-emission vehicles for them to meet the standards. Policies like giving tax credits are not going to stay on forever as EVs are becoming more cost-competitive. Universal electrification of roads still has a lot of challenges. These include issues like vehicle licensing, taxation, charging standards and management of grid demand.

The future will make electric cars affordable and more environmentally friendly. They might probably be the only cars running.

For now, there’s still a lot of development and even regulations required. All the players in the industry need to work together. The government, the manufacturers and consumers have to work towards the dream of an electric future come true.


I feel that electric cars make up for their shortcomings, except for in some niche cases like in Poland where the country exclusively depends on fossil fuel energy. I also think that in the future, the current disadvantages will be diminished because of better technologies, production and the shift to cleaner greener energy.

Only time will tell if electric cars are better for the environment, as of now they are good enough to bring about a change but there are a few issues that still have to be addressed and will take time to be implemented.

Till then we can resort to either hybrid cars or start off with an electric car and hope the changes kick in faster than we anticipated.

FICCI and Rocky Mountain Institute published a report titled ‘Enabling India’s Transition to Electric Mobility’. It states that moving to electric vehicles in the passenger sector could save $300 billion for the country.

Electric vehicles take up 49.1% of the total annual vehicle sales in Norway. The reason for such an effective transition is the role of their government. Government money was used to kick-start charging stations. The government also invested in financial incentives for taking part in the movement. Private companies are now in the game and taking over operations.

India has pledged certain goals under the Paris agreement for sustainable energy development. These are: 

  • By 2030, at least 40% of electricity generated will be from non-fossil fuel sources. 
  • At least 175 Gigawatts of electricity through renewables sources by 2022. 
  • Afforestation allowing up to 3.0 billion tons of carbon dioxide to be stored in sinks and reservoirs.

We all are in the fight against climate change. For someone who might have missed it, climate change is the fast-deteriorating climate conditions of our planet.

The reason being almost all our activities cause damage to the environment. How? The emissions are greenhouse gases which trap heat in the atmosphere increasing the temperature of our planet. This can have very adverse effects on the climate. The players in the market now have to work towards the transition and should make sure all this pans out well. Only the future will tell what happens, India’s heart seems to be at the right place. All that’s left is to put in the effort and investment to make the dream of green cars come true. 

The positives surrounding going full EVs is the driving factor for this change. The benefits too huge to be ignored. The reduction in pollution alone is a good enough reason to go electric. But coupled with that, India can gain a lot financially from reducing oil imports. Going full green is also an initiative to produce electricity from green and clean sources. All these advantages help this change a no brainer and it’s the right thing to do.

It can cost anywhere from $500-$900 for the home charging system and installing it can set you back by $500-$2000. On average it will cost around $2000 which leads to the higher initial investment of owning an electric car.

  • Electric cars have batteries that you can charge at home with the help of included chargers. The batteries are rated with certain kWh and this determines the range of electric cars. The higher the kWh, the longer you can travel without needing to charge again. 

To calculate the electricity used and the cost of electricity we need to know the battery rating and range of the vehicle.

The Hyundai Kona uses 27kW of energy for every 100 miles, while Mini electric uses 31 kWh of energy for every 100 miles.

Electricity costs vary from region to region and this makes it hard to calculate. But taking an average and working with it gives these costs for 45,000 miles.

  • In an effort to help people switch to electric cars, manufacturers offer benefits like free maintenance for the first 3 years or first 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. This reduces the overall cost of an electric car over its lifetime. But ignoring the free maintenance, electric cars like Hyundai Kona and Mini Electric cost $2,970 for every 45,000 miles.

  • When compared to their direct gasoline counterparts, they are cheaper. The Mini (gasoline) requires $3,839 of maintenance while the Hyundai Kona (gasoline) will set you back by $4,091 for maintenance over 45,000 miles. 
  • There is one another maintenance cost for electric cars and this is the battery, it’s all about the battery for an electric car. Over time, a battery loses its capacity due to degradation. This means you’ll have to replace the battery down the line if you are planning to use it for beyond the manufacturer’s warranty or lifetime range. 
  • Manufacturers offer 8 to 10 years of warranty or 1,00,000 to 1,50,000 miles, but if you are planning to use beyond that, you will have to replace your existing one. This can set you back by $4,500 in the case of a Nissan Leaf. But the savings you get from other maintenance charges can easily cover up for this.

It is because electricity is cheaper and electric cars require less maintenance. 

The cost of battery manufacturing is coming down and this can only be good for the future of electric cars. Better and a more mature manufacturing process combined with cheaper batteries will bring down the cost of electric cars. The future is bright for electric cars and that future is just a few years away. 

While they are little on the costlier side of things now, the fact that they are environmentally friendly cannot be ignored. It is a small price to pay if you are concerned about the environment. Buying a gasoline car is sensible for now if the cost is of utmost importance, but this can change soon in the near future.

These qualities make them the best fit for portable electronics and electric vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries help vehicle manufacturers save on space because of their high energy density. 

Lithium-ion batteries are also safer than most battery technologies. But they can be harmful or cause explosions or fires when put under a lot of pressure, but they are safer than other technologies. This combined with manufacturers pushing for safety first helps to protect customers. 

Lithium-ion batteries are costlier than other battery technologies. But with most Electric vehicles and Hybrid vehicles sporting them, they are constantly researched upon. They are the best-fit for electric vehicles. Research and development are focused on reducing their high cost, life cycle, capacity and better safety measures. They will be the primary technology for batteries in electric cars and so I will be focusing more on them below.

They also have a short life cycle and this calls for frequent replacing. Advanced versions of these batteries are being developed to be used in vehicles but only to provide support power. Lead-acid batteries are not so popular in the electric vehicle segment anymore so I won’t be focusing on this technology anymore.

  • Batteries found in electric cars, that is lithium-ion batteries are hard to manufacture. They use rare earth metals, like lithium and cobalt. Extracting these metals are hard and, in the process, use a lot of energy and cause a lot of emissions. And this can cause a significant impact on the environment.
  • These batteries are a reason why electric cars have a higher footprint than gasoline cars during production.  While they do have their negative impacts on the environment, it is the versatility of Lithium-ion car batteries that make them the present and the future of electric vehicles.
  • The impact on the environment can be reduced because of their re-usability. After their life powering cars, these batteries can be used in factories and homes by feeding them into the energy cycle. 
  • Repurposing lithium-ion batteries can create a closed-loop for the birth and eventual recycling of the batteries. This means that the battery manufacturers can use the batteries again to generate power for the factory. This helps in waste and reduces environmental impact compared to throwing away the batteries or not being able to recycle them.   

Large car manufacturers are already creative in the repurposing of lithium-ion batteries and have plans for them.

  • Nissan wants to provide backup power to the Amsterdam ArenA (home to Ajax Football club) by using retired electric car batteries.
  • Toyota plans to install retired batteries outside convenience stores in Japan. These batteries will store electricity from solar panels and will power fridges and other appliances inside the store.
  • Renault will use the batteries from the Renault Zoe EV in a home energy battery storage system called the Power-vault.

Rechargeable batteries undergo cycles of discharge and charge, and this is true for electric vehicles too. Batteries in electric cars discharge when they run and charge when they are plugged in. This process affects the amount of charge that can be held by a battery. And this leads to a reduction of range and time taken to charge.

  • Manufacturers offer 5-10 years of warranty but batteries can last for 10-20 years before they need for replacement arises.  
  • Manufactures offer 8-year warranties or 1,00,000-1,50,000 miles for their batteries, Nissan and Tesla offer such warranties. This when compared to other lithium-ion batteries, it is baffling for me.
  • Phones and laptops use the same battery technology but they start to considerably lose their capacity in a couple of years. Phones and laptop batteries can have a couple of hundred charge cycles before starting to lose their capacity. This is because phones are deemed as products that are used for a few years at max. And phones aren’t the major cause of all the debate around global warming.
  • EV manufacturers have to design batteries that can last for thousands of miles. Most of the innovation in the EV industry goes to the battery because they are the engine of an EV.

The better the battery, the better the use case and purpose of electric vehicles. Poor battery technology can only cause more harm to the environment. Clever design technologies in the battery help them to achieve longer, more sustained battery life in an electric vehicle. 

Disposal of Electric Car Batteries

What happens when they are fully dead like when these batteries can’t hold a charge anymore? Instead of reusing, these batteries are either disposed or sent for recycling. Batteries use chemicals that are toxic and hazardous to the environment and all kinds of lifeforms. So this requires them to be disposed of safely. 

If batteries are not disposed of properly, they can cause extreme cases of air and water pollution. They are extremely hazardous and poisonous to life forms. The chemicals can cause widespread damage if not disposed of carefully.

All battery technologies are harmful and toxic if not disposed of safely, including the ones in electric cars. But manufacturers are working towards battery life cycle management to solve the expensive and toxic disposal of batteries. These include reuse of batteries and recycling them.

The lithium-ion batteries found in Electric cars are versatile and give many years of use. So, once they are removed (retired) from cars because they are not as efficient, they are deemed to be dead. They still have life left in them; they just lose their ability to provide a decent driving experience.

  • These retired batteries are used to power homes, offices or factories in a larger battery system. In here, the batteries store electricity that can be used later when needed.  
  • If your home is powered by renewable energy sources like solar or wind, you can use the electricity generated to be stored in these retired batteries. This can help in reducing bills and can be better for the environment too. These batteries are used in industries like hospitals too to power electrical components. 
  • Batteries when they are fully dead without any re-usability, they are either disposed of or recycled. During recycling, separation of materials takes place. Materials like Cobalt, lithium salts, aluminum, copper and steel are separated.
  • The recycling process now only yields half the materials. But manufacturers are working on this and want to improve the recycling yield. 

Volkswagen is leading the charge as it announced a plant for battery recycling that target to recycle 97% of the battery components. The batteries are shredded, dried and sieved to recover as much material as possible. These materials will help in the manufacturing of batteries.   


Electric cars are here to stay and so are their batteries. The only change I can see in the future is them getting better.

Batteries will always be harmful, and there will always be a negative impact on the environment. All we can do is to reduce this impact by innovating in these technologies. Manufacturers are working towards them.

With better technology, they will be cheaper, more efficient and have longer life cycles. With innovative reuse and recycling programs, the environmental impact of batteries will reduce.

The future looks good for electric vehicle batteries and the industry is moving in the right direction.

There are a significant number of difference between electric cars and gas cars right from what powers them to their impact on the environment. Both are designed to look alike but would not perform the same way.

Gas cars run on fuel (petrol or diesel); they work by burning the fuel in a combustion engine. This process produces energy to move cars. The energy generated during combustion powers the vehicle.

The side effect being, burning of fuel emits greenhouse gases and these gases are harmful to the environment. These gases cause global warming because they trap heat.

  • This is because the manufacturing process is new and a lot of new plants have to be set up for them. Research and development of a new product are also high. So, the upfront cost of an electric car can be high compared to that of a similarly performing gas vehicle.

For example, a Hyundai Kona costs $21,440 for the gasoline version whereas the Hyundai Kona electric costs $38,330. This puts the electric cars at a disadvantage, but it’s a small price to pay for innovation and new class product. 

  • Costs are not driven only by the price of a product, over the course of a vehicle’s lifetime, we have considered the cost due to fuel and maintenance too. When it comes to maintenance, electric cars cheaper to maintain. They don’t need frequent oil changes and other engine check-ups.  

Fuel or electricity charges that are the cost required to drive the cars. Let’s take both versions of the Hyundai Kona again

  • The gasoline version requires 3.3 gallons of fuel for every 100 miles.
  • The Hyundai Kona Electric uses 27-kWh of energy for every 100 miles.

As of February last year, the average fuel cost was $2.44 per gallon. For 45,000 miles this adds up to $3623. Electricity prices are all over the place depending on the region. But after taking everything into consideration, it would cost $1723 for the electric Kona to travel 45,000 miles. 

Owners of electric cars receive tax credits of $7,500 bringing down the overall cost of driving one. By this comparison, the Hyundai Kona costs $39,817 over a three-year period. While the Hyundai Kona electric costs $47,811 including the tax credit. When a similar comparison is drawn between Mini Hardtop(fuel) and Mini Electric, the cost for Three-year period $41,454 and $41,812 respectively.

Electric cars also have incentives like free maintenance from the manufactures for 3-years.  

In the end, electric cars end up costing more than their fuel-powered counterparts over a 3-year period.

This is probably the most debated topic revolving around electric and gasoline cars. Because measuring the environmental impacts of a product is not easy to determine. The carbon footprint of a product is a reliable way to find the environmental impact when taking all the factors into consideration. And in the case of cars, we have to take all the possible sources of pollution over their lifetime. This includes production when they are running and after their lifetime when they are sent to recycling.  

  • During production, electric cars tend to fare worse than gas cars and this is primarily due to the mining process for rare earth materials like Lithium and Cobalt. The higher carbon footprint of electric cars mostly falls on the back of the batteries used in them.

  • During running, electric cars produce zero-emission making the obvious choice over gasoline cars. But the source of electricity should be taken into consideration. If the electricity to charge the vehicles are from nonrenewable sources, then electric cars can be as harmful as gasoline cars to run.
  • When produced and run-on renewables sources of energy, electric cars are the better options to minimize environmental impact. The reason, zero-emission from the vehicle itself. 

Over the lifetime, electric cars have a lower carbon footprint than gas cars. This makes them a safer bet for the environment. The reason for the introduction of electric vehicles has been to curb the environmental damage caused by conventional vehicles. More innovation can only make the production of electric cars better and more efficient making them a sweeter deal in the future. Electric cars are better for the environment in 95% of the world.

A car can be either faster or quicker. Quicker is how fast the car reaches a higher speed that is its acceleration. For example, if the time taken for a car to go from 0-60 miles per hour is lower, then the quicker it is. A car is faster when it can reach high speeds and sustain it. So, a faster car is one with a higher miles per hour value. 

  • Electric cars to one’s imagination are surprisingly quicker than gas-based cars. If you had asked someone who doesn’t know, they will choose gas-based cars to trump electric cars in the performance category.  Electric cars are quicker because power is directly fed to the motors running the wheels. This gives them higher torque and so better acceleration.
  • Gasoline cars are not as quick because the engine feeds power to the transmission first. This increases the time taken and about 15% of the power is lost going through the transmission. This makes gas cars not as quick. 
  • On the contrary, gas cars are faster can hold these higher speeds for a longer time. They are faster because of all the time they have had innovate, and they have a weight advantage. The batteries in electric cars are massive and thus they are not capable to run at a higher speed.

For now, electric cars are quicker than gasoline cars but apart from a drag race, a gas car will always beat an electric car in a race.

The efficiency of a car can be determined from the type of fuel it runs on.

  • Electric cars use electricity stored in their batteries to move. Electric cars are generally more efficient to run because they have fewer moving parts and simpler technology. The battery powers the motors connected to the wheels, so almost no energy is wasted.

  • For a gas car, there is a lot of energy wasted, this is because fuel is burnt to run the car. The reason for the inefficiency is the heat generated and emission, the only process that lets out waste is inefficient. The reason being this waste can’t be used for anything else, so the energy is not completely harvested to good use. As I have noted, engines of gas cars provide power to the transmission which not as efficient and use some of the power. 

As these are different methods used to run, we can only use cost as a measurement scale. And as per the above cost analysis, electric cars are cheaper to drive. For any customer, this makes them more efficient to ride compared to a gas car.  


The automobile industry is changing and it’s changing fast, since the first engine to just a few years back, automobiles were all running on gas. Now we have competition in the automobile space. Gas-powered vehicles are not the only ones in the market anymore. Electric cars are threatening to gain the market share, possibly dominate it. Electric cars are the future, it is inevitable and they will slowly replace gas cars. 

For now, you can or cannot go wrong with both. From a consumer standpoint, electric cars generally tend to be the costlier option. But if the environment is a concern for you, jumping on to the electric car bandwagon might just be the right thing for you. Not everyone can invest more because it’s safer for the environment because that’s not how the world works. 

Unless costs reduce, and accessibility to electric cars increase, electrics cars will always be a thing of the future. To make then the present, innovation and time is required for which we don’t have any shortage. They are undoubtedly “The Future” of transportation.

Though Electric cars use batteries as their primary source of power, Hybrid cars use a combination of both gasoline and batteries as a source of power. While many consider Hybrid cars to be a cross between electric cars and gasoline cars, the damage done to the environment is not as bad as a stand-alone gasoline powered car.

Electric Cars on the other hand will utilize the energy stored within the battery to run, once this power supply has depleted you’d have to plug in the car to charge in order to use it again.

Hybrid cars use two types of technologies to run, electric and an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE). Both help the car to run. The reason for using both together is to aid fuel efficiency and increase performance. There are different implementations of these technologies. These are: 

  • Parallel Hybrid: This is the most common method; both the electric motor and ICE help are connected to a common transmission. The power from works in tandem to help the car move. The transmission can be automatic, manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT).  
  • Series Hybrid: In this type, the electric motor does all the work of running. The gasoline engine is used only to recharge the battery. This makes the car run like a fully electric vehicle, smooth and mostly silent. The experience can be a little discomforting in some situations because the engine can rev at any time it needs to provide power to the battery so it can feel out of place. The BMW i3 is an example of this type of hybrid.
  • Plug-In Hybrid: Plug-in hybrid uses a battery of larger capacity which has to be charged using an external source. In this implementation, the battery allows all-electric drive for shorter range. This can help in fuel efficiency if the distances are low. The range of the battery is usually between 15 to 55 miles. The Chrysler Pacifica is an example of this type. 
  • Mild Hybrids: In the above cases, the electric motor is powerful enough to run the car on its own. In the case of mild hybrids, the electric motor can only aid the combustion engine which does most of the job. This helps in increasing efficiency and performance too.

  • Hybrid cars are easier on the environment because they don’t have huge batteries. Manufacturing electric cars have a worse effect on the environment compared to hybrid or gasoline cars. This is mostly because of the battery. 
  • The batteries use rare earth materials and manufacturing them requires a lot of energy and in turn a lot of emissions.
  • This is similar when it comes to the cost too. Hybrid cars are generally more expensive than gasoline cars but are cheaper than fully electric cars.
  • The reason hybrid cars are more expensive than gasoline cars are because of the technology. And they are cheaper than electric cars because they use relatively smaller batteries.
  • Electric cars are the costliest mostly because of the sheer size of the battery in them.

Hybrids emits greenhouse gases because of the combustion engine. But since they have an electric engine too, the fuel used is less and so it the emission. In general, the carbon footprint of a running hybrid car is 50-60% lower.  

  • Electric cars produce no emission when running making the cars emission-free. The only caveat is the source of electricity.
  • The cleaner the source, the less the overall emission from an electric car. It the source of electricity is not clean, electric cars are responsible for the emission from producing electricity.  
  • Another type of pollution car notoriously cause is noise pollution. The conventional car equipped with an Internal combustion engine is a source of the noise. In crowded places, with a lot of traffic, this can be hectic for people walking by or on bikes.
  • Electric cars run almost silent, and hybrid cars are not as noisy as fully ICE cars. Sometimes too good can be too bad, and electric cars are an example of that in this case.

Fuel powered cars can almost run in any part of the world with ease. Electric cars, on the other hand are powered by batteries and these rely on the surrounding conditions to work optimally.

  • Electric cars have an ideal operating temperature of 25 degrees. This is because of the lithium-ion batteries in them. If the temperature gets too high, it can have an effect on the life of battery requiring for a replacement sooner. And in colder regions, the batteries fall to a lower capacity reducing the range of the cars.  
  • Hybrid vehicles have the kind of batteries but they are not as dependent on the battery for optimal performance because if the combustion engine in them. 
  • Speed and mileage/range are different between the two types of vehicles. Hybrid cars have a mileage whereas electric cars have a range that they can cover in a single charge.

To draw parallels, I am comparing hybrid cars to gasoline-based cars. Hybrid cars more fuel-efficient than gasoline-based cars because of the electrical engine aiding the conventional engine. Therefore, hybrid cars have higher mileage. 

  • Electric cars are in a league of their own because they run extremely efficiently because therefore way less energy is wasted. The moving parts of hybrid and conventional cars are waste energy trying to run.
  • Electric cars don’t have transmissions or moving parts except for the motor connected to the wheels and the battery. Cost-wise electric cars are cheapest to run with hybrids coming in the second place and gasoline cars lagging way behind. 
  • Performance of hybrid cars are better than that of electric cars, this is evident with the fact that even F1 cars use hybrid technologies. Electric cars are surprisingly quick and can get from 0-60 miles per hour faster in most cases.
  • But hybrid cars using both an electric and gasoline engine, they can adjust to the performance demand. They are better suited, using electric for better acceleration and the combustion engine to its higher speeds. 

Battery Disposal

The common between both a hybrid and an electric car is the use of batteries in both of them.

  • Batteries are hard to dispose of and contain harmful chemicals. If they are not disposed of are recycled properly, they can be an environmental hazard.
  • Most hybrid and electric cars use Lithium-ion batteries. They are harmful for the environment but they can be recycled or even reused to get the best out of them. They are better than lead-acid batteries.

Still, battery disposal is an important aspect of hybrid or electric cars, the only difference being electric cars having larger batteries compared to hybrid cars. 


The battle between hybrid and electric cars is a close one, both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Personally, I would choose a hybrid car in the present and think about an electric car in the future. The reasons being lower costs compared to electric, better efficiency and better for the environment when compared to gasoline cars. But I can see electric cars getting better and cheaper and in the near future, I can fancy myself driving one.
