Hence, if the solution to your electric scooter’s issue includes some tools, always remain cautious. Moreover, if you’re not confident or comfortable in any situation, it’s always better to look out for a professional.

Now, without wasting any further time, let’s get started.

How to fix a dead battery in an electric scooter?

I know it’s pretty challenging to figure out whether your scooter has a low battery or it’s entirely dead. But, what if I tell you that it’s pretty easy? All you have to do is try starting your scooter. It has a low battery if it starts but can’t keep running for a reasonable amount of time. On the other hand, if it’s even starting, then it’s a case of a dead battery.

Now, what’s the solution to a dead battery? Surprisingly, dead batteries are one of the most common issues in electric scooters, and hence its solution is also relatively easy. Once again, all you have to do is charge your electric scooter’s battery for a longer duration than usual.

In case your scooter has an LED indicator light to show the battery’s charge status, then make sure to charge your vehicle until the indicator turns green. But, if your vehicle doesn’t have such indicating lights, then you’ll need a voltmeter. Any voltmeter will be able to tell you whether your scooter’s battery is even charging or not.

If it’s charging, wait for a few hours and then try again to start your scooter. In case it’s not charging, then it’s time for you to replace your scooter’s battery.

How to fix an electric scooter’s engine overheating issues?

I got a lot worried when my scooter’s engine decided to overheat for the first time. Hence, I can entirely relate to you if you’re afraid too, but luckily, I have a solution for this too. During the engine’s overheating, your vehicle’s batteries also get quite hot, and it can affect the overall lifespan of your vehicle too.

How to Fix an Electric Scooter

In today’s market, many electric scooters are coming up with advanced safety mechanisms that automatically shut off the vehicle. But, if your scooter also doesn’t have that feature, then first turn off your scooter’s engine. Now, wait and let it cool off completely. Then, carefully check and see if you can find any damaged wire or fuse.

If yes, then it might lead to an electrical controller issue, which I will explain next in this article. Moreover, such damaged wires or fuses can put excessive pressure on your scooter’s battery. Hence, it’s better to look for a professional mechanic or send your scooter for service repair immediately.

How to fix an electrical controller issue on an electric scooter?

As I mentioned earlier, if there are any damaged wires or fuses, it’s the case of an electrical controller issue. But, what’s the electric controller? Every modern electric scooter has an electric controller, which basically includes a circuit board with all the wires and fuses connected.

But, if any foreign material like water or other types of liquid enters this area, the whole circuit board will get negatively affected. Consequently, your scooter’s engine might not turn on at all or even if it does, it might overheat pretty quickly.

So, what’s the solution here? The task is a little challenging this time, but it’s effective if done rightly. All you have to do is look out for loose wires and make sure to tighten them properly. Moreover, you can also check if the current transistor is popped or not. Although transistors’ issues in electric scooters are pretty rare, it’s also pretty easy to replace them.

Remember that looking out for loose wires or popped transistors is a pretty daunting task to deal with. So, if you’re not feeling comfortable, then it’s always best to call a technician for your scooter’s service.

How to fix a faulty speed controller on an electric scooter?

While keeping it all about the controllers, another common issue in electric scooters lies within their speed controllers.

Every electric scooter has this controller present which allows the rider to drive their scooters within a predefined speed range. But, if your electric scooter has a faulty speed controller, then you might experience some sudden changes in your vehicle’s speed or make it slower than usual.

But, fixing a speed controller isn’t that tough if you’re well aware of the whole fixing process. And, what’s the fixing process? Follow these steps, and you’ll be good to go:

  • Firstly, turn your electric scooter on and check if the speed controller is even working or not.
  • If it’s working, look out for the electric wiring and check if any fumes are present around the engine area.
  • Now, carefully check its switch, fuse and circuit breaker. Once you have found a specific fault part, it’s time to dismantle the speed controller.
  • Dismantling it will give you access to its internal area where you can check again if there are any loose or broken wires. If the cables aren’t the problem, then check the fuse and circuit breaker part again.
  • Now, reassemble all the parts carefully and make sure to tighten all the parts and screws correctly.
  • Lastly, give your electric scooter another test ride and see if it’s still showing the same issues or not. If not, then you’ve fixed the problem without any fuss.

How to fix an electric scooter’s slowing performance?

What if my electric scooter runs only for a shorter period or entirely stops after a few minutes? The answer to this question lies around two components, i.e. battery and tires. Indeed, uphill driving can reduce the overall speed, but if your electric scooter is slowing down on a flat surface, then it’s worth noticing issue.

So, what to do in such a case? Unluckily, every electric scooter’s battery can eventually die or become weaker after a certain period. As a result, these old batteries can’t carry enough charge to power your vehicles properly. Hence, in this case, the only possible solution would be replacing the old battery with a new one.

On the other hand, always remember that slowing down your scooter can depend on its tires. If the tire pressure is lower than the recommended PSI value, then it can slow your electric scooter by 3-5mph quickly. So, make sure to air up your scooter’s tires regularly.

How to fix an electric scooter’s kill switch?

Last but not least, the kill switch is another issue that bothers many electric scooter riders every day. But, what’s this kill switch? Many modern electric scooters have a kill switch present on their engine, which can help in saving energy.

Moreover, it’s widely recommended to turn your electric scooter’s kill switch on during charging or when you’ve done enough riding for the day.

Now it’s entirely possible that in the near future, your electric scooter might not start. So, before directly checking the scooter’s battery or engine, it’s better to check if the kill switch is still turned on or not. If it’s still on, turn it to the off position steadily and try starting your scooter again.

Takeaway

Despite covering so many issues, it’s entirely possible that you’re facing an issue that isn’t discussed here. In that case, I’d recommend you to look out for a professional mechanic’s help or at least carry your vehicle’s owner manual as sometimes it can help you immensely with such common issues.

Apart from this, there are some other issues like losing your scooter’s keys or constantly blown out circuits or fuses. But, covering all of them in one article will indeed take forever and might require hours of attention from you.

Lastly, I hope that you’ve now gained many insights about your scooter and you are ready to fix your vehicle’s common issues. Sadly our vehicles can’t always perform in the ideal ways, and hence it becomes more vital for us to learn as much as possible about them.
